Ohio Mushroom DNA Lab

OMDL is a non-profit organization that unites amateur, community, and professional scientists to collaboratively explore and advance the field of fungal genomics. By harnessing diverse expertise and perspectives, we aim to deepen our understanding of fungi and their ecological, taxonomical, and medicinal significance.

Who is OMDL?

Ohio Mushroom DNA Lab (OMDL) is a dedicated mycological organization comprised of passionate volunteers united by a common goal: advancing the study of fungal genomics. Our members span the nation and beyond, all committed to the science of mycology. Through a combination of fieldwork, laboratory research, bioinformatics, and DNA analysis, OMDL expertly executes DNA barcoding of fungi from beginning to end.

By integrating both amateur and professional scientists, we are making significant strides in fungal taxonomy. Our connection to the iNaturalist community plays a crucial role in our process, as we begin with field observations of fungi. Using iNaturalist as a primary tool, we barcode all specimens submitted to our lab that have a recorded observation, facilitating our research and contributions to the field.
